Harassment Training Requirements Washington State

Washington state harassment training requirements (SB 5258) is Washington’s law pertaining to sexual harassment training which affects certain industries. The workplace harassment law applies to employers in retail, hotel, motel, security and property services contractor industries where at least one person is employed. A property services contractor is an entity or a person that employs commercial janitorial services workers, with some exceptions. The Washington State Office of the Attorney General provides a one-page flyer which explains the definition and types of sexual harassment, workplace harassment avoidance requirements for employers and steps employees can take if they’ve become victims of sexual harassment. The flyer also provides steps for employees that have witnessed sexual harassment. The flyer is available in both English and Spanish.

Certificate of Completion

Students receive a Certificate of Completion after successfully completing the Washington State Sexual Harassment Training course. Certification proves successful course completion, an understanding of Washington state sexual harassment law, and should be presented to employers.

Washington State Harassment Training

Washington State requires employers to provide Washington State harassment training to all employees. The sexual harassment training must cover various types of workplace harassment, including sexual harassment, discriminatory harassment, and retaliation. Washington State employers must also provide information on complaint procedures and consequences for engaging in workplace harassment. The training must be conducted within the first 90 days of employment and be repeated at least once every three years. Washington State employers who fail to provide proper sexual harassment training may be subject to penalties and legal consequences.

Harassment training requirements - Washington state

Every hotel, motel, retail, or security guard entity, or property services contractor, who employs an employee.

Managers, supervisors, and employees.

(a) Prevent sexual assault and sexual harassment in the workplace;
(b) Prevent sexual discrimination in the workplace; and
(c) Educate the employer’s workforce regarding protection for employees who report violations of a state or federal law, rule, or regulation;
(d) Provide a list of resources for the employer’s employees to utilize. At a minimum, the resources must include contact information of the equal employment opportunity commission, the Washington state human rights commission, and local advocacy groups focused on preventing sexual harassment and sexual assault; and
(e) Provide a panic button to each employee.

The Washington State law pertaining to workplace harassment training does not specify a required training frequency.

sexual harassment training

Washington State has specific requirements for sexual harassment training for employees. Under the Washington Law Against Discrimination (WLAD), all employers with 15 or more employees are required to provide sexual harassment prevention training for all employees within the first 90 days of employment and at least once every two years after that.

The training must cover topics such as what constitutes sexual harassment, how to report harassment, and the legal protections for employees who report harassment. Employers must also maintain records of the training provided to employees.
